Handsome Tours are thrilled to announce that indie-pop five-piece Hippo Campus will be making the trip down under for the very first time in 2019. The Minnesota natives are set to light up stages in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, alongsid
Hippo Campus’s inaugural Australian visit will see them hit the road off the back of their sophomore LP ‘Bambi’ – released in September on Transgressive Records(Julia Jacklin, Flume, SOPHIE, Alvvays).
Filled with tracks that endlessly morph in mood and texture, the five-piece approached the making of the album with an eye toward the undoing of any distorted, social-media-fuelled perceptions of the band.
“Social media promotes this weird non-reality when it comes to artists and bands, where they get put up on a pedestal and treated like some kind of upgraded human,” says guitarist Nathan Stocker. “We’d much rather make community happen with our fans, which is the whole reason we started this in the first place.”
Throughout ‘Bambi’, Hippo Campus match their self-examination with a blissful, adventurous sonic approach. Cruisy vocals, delicate guitar lines, skittering beats and shimmering synth make up their signature and inventive sound.
From humble beginnings as high school pals, Hippo Campus wasted no time infiltrating the local Saint Paul, Minnesota scene with their smooth tracks and consuming high energy live sets. They went on to attract all the right attention, scoring slots at SXSW and an appearance on Conan, all ahead of the release of their 2014 debut EP ‘Bashful Creatures’.
Relentless touring saw them continuously generating a potent buzz, and the group went on to release their first full-length album in 2017. ‘Landmark’ showcased more of those stellar vocals from Jake Luppen and that impressive and super tight instrumental work, with lush tracks ‘Way It Goes’ and ‘Buttercup’ racking up millions of plays online.
